We love cartoons. Especially the voices. I know I tried to do many of the characters by Daws Butler, Paul Winchell and Mel Blanc, and failed miserably. However, Pat does have a knack for it, while my forte is more the technical side. It was that good match that made this skit possible, since it’s literally spliced line for line on a reel to reel – we didn’t have access to multitrack recording at the time, just 2 reel to reels and a few cart machines. So, after cutting the characters together, and laying down sound FX onto another generation of tape, this was the final result.
Today we could do this in an hour or so.
Back then it was a little more tedious, and took several days to post. I think we broke in to Y94-FM in Syracuse and commandeered their production room for an evening (thanks, Eric!). I remember doing a bunch of bits, and also did the raws of this – Pat did all the characters, and couldn’t physically overlap his own voice, so he did each line separately, and I mixed the master later back WHEB-FM in Portsmouth NH.
This was such a success, we ended up doing another involving Stanley, an engorged Chumley, and a blow up doll. Yes, it is more twisted than what you are currently thinking.
This bit never made it onto any of our releases, because of copyright concerns – so I’d grab it quick if I were you, before I get a ‘cease and desist’ letter. Then again, maybe Jay Ward Productions does have a sense of humor – Enjoy.
