Elementary, Dear Watson. BYD is on the Periodic Table of Geek Musicians!

February 13, 2011
At least we're 'Radio' active!

Bohrium? You have to be kidding me!

The Boffo Yux Dudes on the Periodic Table of Geek Musicians!

We were honored with a position on the Periodic Table of Geek Musicians tonight. It’s not only a place in history, it’s also a way to generate funds for one of Dave Leigh’s charity endeavors, Rite Care. I’ll let him talk about it.

***

I’m Dave Leigh, aka the vocal half of the songwriting team Dr. Lindyke. While not programming or writing songs, I also spend a portion of my free time supporting a charity called Rite Care Centers for Childhood Language Disabilities. Rite Care provides speech and language therapy to pre-school children without regard to race, creed, or the family’s inability to pay. It’s funded entirely by members of the Scottish Rite through various fund-raising projects (not all of which are as harebrained as this one).

So there are two BYD items up on the site if you’re interested in helping out Rite Care –

The Chapeau of the cereal minded

Click to get the hat - All the profits go towards Rite Care

Or you can choose this lovely T-shirt

Stays Funny - Even in Milk

The 1st Boffo Yux Dudes release on a T-shirt. Click here to buy one.

Thanks to Dave for including us in his worthy endeavor, and I’m hoping more artists will be joining us soon!

It was quick, it was fun, it made me laugh.

January 17, 2011

Looks like a barrel of laughs....

I ‘ve been working on a new project with Allan Morgan and Pat Montello for Niveous’s Gift of Music 2011 benefit, and I was getting a little frustrated. We actually made a deadline for once, but it was extended out a week, so I couldn’t share it quite yet with the public. We had a lot of fun with it, and I was excited to do something with Pat again after many years. But I didn’t have any outside people to bounce it off of.

Yesterday I was in the Artifiction chatroom, and saw Dr. Lindyke working on his new song  – so I tossed him a link to check it out to get an opinion. I didn’t have the audio feed at first, but could see him contemplating, then snickering, then rolling in conniptions back and forth in his chair. Made me feel good that it hit the mark.

I think we nailed it.

I’ll post the links to Gift of Music 2011 when it goes live – hopefully later this week. Here’s where you can check out the previous year’s entries – there are a lot of ‘Song Fight’ alumni involved who we’ve met through the SpinTunes and Masters of Song Fu contests.

Christmas Songs you probably won’t hear on the radio – Part 3 ‘Ewoks’ by Lex Vader

December 12, 2010
Don't ask him if he has cookies

Lex Vader seems to like Star Wars. That's just a guess.

I met Lex Vader during the ‘Masters of Song Fu‘ contest, and always thought he was a little off. He also has a way with songs, like this ditty about the little ruffians from Endor. It was the result from writing a winter holiday song that is not about the holidays.  How you get furry beasts trying to eat you out of that, I’m not sure, but the song made me laugh. Here’s Lex’s tune from his self titled evil emotronic alternapop band.

Enjoy!

“Ewoks” (119 BPM)

[E, A, Gbm, A]
We all know that Life Day is a special day for celebration
You can go and show the Wookiees how much you appreciate them

[B, A, Dbm, B]
[Abm, A, Abm, B]
But there is another creature that you really shouldn’t visit
Don’t go to the forest moon of Endor if you’re fond of living

[E, A, B, A]
[E, A, Abm, B]
Ewoks will eat you even if it is the holidays
Ewoks will eat you, they don’t really care at all
(They’re crazy and hungry)

If you go out looking for a little of that cheerful spirit
And you’re walking past an Ewok village, trust me, don’t go near it
The only spirits that you’ll find are… your dead loved ones stood behind you
Watching from an awkward line as teddy bear cooks tenderize you

Ewoks will eat you even if it is the holidays
Ewoks will eat you, they don’t really care at all
(They’re crazy and hungry)

Should the forest tempt you
Charter a flight up to see Chewbacca
May the Force be with you
If you end up on an Ewok’s wok, yeah

You can tell them you’re a god, but you will likely be rejected
Unless you’ve got a golden body or a skirt, you’ll be ingested
There’s a possibility that… you will end up slowly turning
Tied to a rotisserie as fuzzy short freaks watch you burning

Ewoks will eat you even if it is the holidays
Ewoks will eat you, they don’t really care at all
(They’re crazy)
Ewoks will eat you even if it is the holidays
Ewoks will eat you, they don’t really care at all
(They’re crazy and hungry)

Christmas Songs you probably won’t hear on the radio – Part 1 ‘Twangles, the Christmas Squid’ by Jason Morris

December 5, 2010

I’ve noticed a bunch of songs about the holidays my friends have accumulated over the years, and thought it might be the time to start sharing the wealth. So I’m going to try and blog a bunch of them until Christmas, in the hope you get a chuckle, snicker, or feel good about yourself in the holiday spirit.

If you also want to purchase the (where available) spreading the cheer to the original artist, which is a bonus.

How do you do that?

First up – Jason Morris with his Masters of Song Fu favorite ‘Twangles, The Christmas Squid’

It’s an upbeat ditty about a cephalopod that brings toys to kids where Santa can’t quite reach. The chorus keeps bouncing around in my brain, and makes me happy. Enjoy!

I met some new friends the other day.

November 3, 2010

Note: This didn’t start to be a name dropping exercise. It just ended up that way so I could explain the convoluted path that my life has taken the last few days.

I met some new friends the other day. I went to W00tstock Boston with a video camera, and was invited to shoot some backstage footage as well as cover the event. 6 hours and 57 Gigs later, I’m coming out the other side of a fun time with some very gracious people, who I now know a little better. Hopefully they won’t file restraining orders the next time we meet.

I’ll post more on the backstage hi-jinx soon (I still have to do #NaNoWriMo as well) But here’s a taste of the last few days and two people I met that impressed me. They’re both twisty path stories about Marian Call and Marc Abrahams.

I hadn’t heard about Marian until a few months ago. (more…)

More Cowbell for the Mike Lombardo Trio

May 23, 2010

<Click  MoreCowbell.dj to listen to the song – for some reason I can’t embed the link in this version of WordPress…>

I stumbled upon this site, and tried to think of an adequate song to try it out. Since I know Mike Lombardo’s new cd is in pre-order, and releasing soon, I thought this could benefit from additional cowbell (And Christopher Walken – we LOVE Christopher Walken)

Mike Lombardo Loves You - which could get a little awkward in a large group

12 years later, I STILL can’t play guitar…

I want to get invited to these parties!

Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1981!

You can vote for your top 5 songs by clicking on the banner
Al, Dan and I wrote a song for the latest round of ‘Masters of Song Fu’, an ‘Iron Chef’ of  songwriting skills for bragging rights on the internet. We’d appreciate it if you’d go and check out the song after you’ve had some fun here, and vote for 5 deserving candidates.
If one of your votes happens to be The Boffo Yux Dudes, we won’t complain. But do check out the tunes. This group is very talented, and has been making some interesting creative choices with their interpretations of the rules.

Our Winters Love – a not all quite there romance song

December 14, 2009
Who knew a reel to reel could be so much fun?

Mmm. Tastes like chicken!

Allan and I worked on another song entry for Masters of Song Fu – Round 3 – this round had you
“Write a winter holiday song that is not about the holidays.”

So, of course, we chose to write this simple ditty about a love gone astray.

The lyrics, while all clean, might be NSFW if you pay attention to them.

You can follow along with the lyrics here.

3 is an Evil Number – Masters of Song Fu Entry

December 5, 2009

Someone got my goat. And now there's hell to pay.

3 is an Evil Number – Master of Song Fu #5 shadow entry

I’ve been interested in the Masters of Song Fu contests since early this year. A bunch of talented and creative people are butting heads trying to write the best songs in various challenges, with the winner getting the honor of writing head to head against ‘Masters’. Think Iron Chef for the songwriters out there.

In my head, I’m going – this is going to be easy. Block out a few hours, pound out a song, and send it in. Who cares if I have no musical talent, current working studio, or a clue how to do it?

I think I found out the hard way.  Luckily, Allan Morgan felt sympathy, and (more…)

Don’t judge me. But you can judge these guys for Masters of Song Fu #5.

November 18, 2009

Logo for Masters of Song Fu #5. It's right up there. No, Really, it is.

I know you’re thinking… What is this Masters of Song Fu, and why do I need to judge it?

Short answer – Cool people wrote some songs to compete in a fun contest. No cash prizes, just to further their craft as artists. You can check it out here, and vote for the top 5 you like. There are 34 entries this round.

Longer answer: Song Fu is a contest for songwriters and musicians, challenging them to create a song within certain rules and guidelines. Some are more free form, and some are much more constricted. The latest contest is one of the more constricting. You have a week to write, produce and uploaded an MP3 of your song to go with all the other groups, then be judged on originality, content, and how well you fit the spirit of the theme. Quite a challenge.

I stumbled upon this when Mike Lombardo randomly followed the BYD on Twitter. He had entered a song for Contest #4, and it looked like a fun project to join in on.  Due to a mix up, I’m not in the competition for #5, but I’ll try and work on one for the non voting ‘shadow’ contest.

More after the break, and my long list on impressions of all the songs this round. – but go and check it out now – the voting ends this weekend, and there’s almost 2 hours worth of original music to listen to – all at no cost.

34 people finished songs for the challenge this round – here’s the post I put up over at Quickstopentertainment.com on thoughts of the entries. I hope you have a chance to check them out before the voting ends, but even after that, you can check out the archives. Good stuff. You can open up this link in a new window and read the bios of the artists, and click this link to download all the songs at once.
