Laughing with the King – Mini LP

January 8, 2010

In honor of the King’s 75th birthday, here are a few Boffo Yux Dudes bit involving our favorite musician. It’s Elvispalooza with the BYD this Weekend! More bits to come.

The lost Elvis skit shows up!

November 8, 2009

The only time we did this skit in front of a live audience was during the BYD & Friends show in Syracuse – it was on Dr. Demento, and an audio tape, but for some reason never made it on any of the compilations or BENT! episodes. Pat still does a killer Elvis.

I think we did actually almost run out of ‘nanas for this segment. The King really likes his finger-shaped fruits. The fact he used a minor chord for ‘one ripe nana’ in his song showed how deep love for the food truly was.

Occasionally, you can go back home.

Boffo Yux Dudes & Friends Pt. 1 – ‘Elvis Says’

The first part of the BYD and Friends show, live from Syracuse University in 1989. Pat does ‘Elvis Says’ with the help of house band ‘Yosemite Quick’.

I grew up in Syracuse, NY and ended up going to Syracuse University for a TV Management and Psychology degree. In ’85 I headed out to New England for Radio and TV work, and ended up creating BYD with Pat and Scott. 4 years later, 2 of Scott’s friends at SU, Renee and Joyce, fresh from working on Null and Void at UUTV, asked us back to do a collaborative show at the Newhouse school – sort of a fun homecoming in between gigs and projects. We jumped at the chance to work with these folks. Bill and Mark made us laugh on a bunch of skits, and it also gave us a chance to do some of our radio bits for TV on a larger scale than the one camera bits for BENT!

One of the most searing memories of that week was the Ernie and Bert puppets. Pat put them on in the car on the way out, and I swear, (more…)

The King will always be a friend of mine.

Studio shot - the live version of 'Celebrity Chefs'

Studio shot - the live version of 'Celebrity Chefs'

I’ve always loved Elvis. Hundreds of people have done impressions of The King. I do a lame impression of Pat doing him. Pat has found a magical middle ground version of him that just rings true. It’s funny, self depreciatingly humble, just larger than life, and almost child like in his innocence. It doesn’t hurt Pat also has the pipes to back up the singing.

We’ve done literally hundreds of skits with Elvis. This is one that made it on the Dr. Demento Show in 1987, and we also did live for the BYD & Friends show in Syracuse in 1989. Enjoy.

Elvis tries to do the right thing – The IRS Help Line call – 1991

Elvis and the IRS – Click to download

In one of our return trips back working at WHEB-FM, we happened to rejoin during a time of transition – The current Program Director and Morning Guy, Jeff Left, was moving on, and we were told a high caliber morning guy would be coming in to replace him. In the end, they chose Bob Wolf.

Let me make this clear – Bob is a great guy and friend – he’s talented, and does an awesome morning show. But when we were tossed together, we tried, but kept butting heads in getting something that worked. Afterwords, we found out management was telling him to do the exact opposite of what we knew was working… and he was caught in the middle of it. We tried to make a go of it, but after they limited our character bits, and then our production segments, we knew there wasn’t much left there to try, and we moved on to EJ’s Salisbury studio to continue our syndication work, leaving behind ‘The Fox and the Wolf’ to morning show history.

One thing we did do – mainly in desperation – was phony phone calls – Bob used them as a staple of his show, so we tried a few off the cuff… but of course, we couldn’t just do a simple prank and then hang up. Instead, we’d try to do stuff like have Pat do his Elvis, and try and call Manuel Noriega just after the rigged election, but before the invasion. We called Lloyds of London as Jack Nicholson attempting to insure his wiener for a million bucks. And we did this one…

Elvis calling the IRS help line, trying to turn himself in.

I can’t believe how natural this all progressed, and also that the fact we figured out exactly when Elvis would be eligible for Social Security before the call. That fact came in very handy.

Elvis – Used Car Salesman

This car lot was right across from Heavenly Donuts in Haverhill. A friend, Dave, hired Pat to do a bit for a real used car commercial.. so if course, I followed along with a second camera, and tweaked the footage a bit. Probably 5 seconds made it into the real commercial.

But that’s not the robot section.

Elvis has been very, very good to us…

May 27, 2008

Elvis needing a sugar fix.

The king is our pal. We’ve created several hundred bits with the King over the years.  We had him do a prank call to Manuel Noriega before he was carted off to jail. He called the IRS to try and turn himself in and make good on not paying his taxes all those years… and he also wandered all over Haverhill, MA with a video camera looking for a donut. This is Pat wandering the streets, and teasing octogenarians at Heavenly Donuts – where he has a flashback to a 1972 gig in Vegas and pretends they were his groupies.

Gotta love it. Enjoy.
